This week we were only able to go to one class, Mrs. Meyers at NPE. We did this the Monday after the super bowl so we able to tie that in well with the lesson. Right now we are still trying to come up with more interactive ideas and lessons for the kids. Also, we are expected to be attending some gym classes at Sugar Creek coming soon!

Nothing really new has taken place regarding NP Play because of this short week. Like mentioned before we updated our lesson plans and made some new ones. For example, we have a new one that focuses on the importance of teamwork that we didn't have before. Also, we were finally able to go to Brandywine for the first time. It was a different atmosphere that I really enjoyed. The kids were great, very engaged, and asked lost of questions. We will be returning there soon to give a second lesson!
Update:
We've been back for two weeks now from winter break. The first week was strictly planning. We emailed a mass amount of teachers and are still waiting on their responses. Another thing we did was make new lesson plans. They are ultimately the same ideas, but they are new and improved and go more in depth for older grades. This week we went back to a kindergarten teacher at SCE. In my opinion this was one of the best lessons we've had so far. The kids were very responsive and engaged. It went very smoothly and the healthy/unhealthy sugars resonated with them. Update:
NP Play is moving along well. Not much has taken place since my last blog post. We really have just kept outreaching to other teachers and like I mentioned before we have branched out to other schools. Last long day Katie and I went over to our first class at NPE. We were able to teach Mrs. Story's class our lesson about athletics. They were a bit rowdy, but did well. We will be back in that class soon to give our nutrition lesson. Update: This past week my group and I have moved into first grade at SCE. So far we've taught the same two lessons to both kindergarten and first. Both times the results have been great. We even had the opportunity to give our nutrition lesson on Halloween which was pretty neat! Mrs. Kleiman, the first grade teacher we went to, provided good feedback and would like us to return in the spring to do more lessons related to sports. Right now we are in planning mode. We have just made a spreadsheet with all the teachers, lessons, classes, and times so we can more efficiently execute our teaching. As we continue we are considering looking into going to new schools so we can hit more classes in the week rather than once during long period. Also, as we move into older grade levels we are expanding our lessons as a whole. At this stage they are basic and we would like to make them more complex for the older students. Complex as in heavier content and more interactive.
Update on NP Play High School Athletic Lesson: Since the past post, my group and I have had two lessons with kindergartens at SCE in Mrs. Bowman's class. Our first lesson was introducing High School Athletics. Because they are young and have short attention spans we made a simple powerpoint with pictures of all the different sports. We explained each one that the school offers and the benefits that come with being active. We were also able to make it interactive and have them draw sports they play/enjoy on their iPads using an app called Doodle Buddy. Overall, it went well. Mrs. Bowman wants us to keep coming back because the kids are learning and having a good time. Sugar Lesson: Our second lesson was also with Mrs. Bowman's class. We did it over sugar or more simply put for them, good food versus bad food. Again, we made a powerpoint that explained what sugar is, had examples of bad sugars, and had examples of good sugars. We explained the importance of sugar intake and how much a kid their size should have. We did this with an example of a coke can. First, we asked how much sugar they thought was in the can. They all shouted their guesses. Then, slowly we filled up a dixie cup with sand "sugar", and repeatedly asked if they thought that that was the right amount. We did this until the whole cup was almost full and they were shocked. After, while we were cleaning up we did an overview of good and bad foods by having them draw on Doodle Buddy again. The lesson went well and we were able to keep them focused and engaged the whole time. We are moving swiftly through the grades and have already gotten in contact with first grade teachers. Also, we have been contacted by the gym teacher who wants us to come in and help incorporate our lesson with her own! Update: Not much has changed from our original lessons. We have made contact with more teachers and have made plans to go to Brandywine, which we have not attended. This past week we have gone to a fourth grade class and another kindergarten class both at SCE. The fourth graders were very fun to teach! They were more attentive and participated a lot. This is from the kindergarten class we went to. She was a cheerleader!
My project is NP Play loosely based off of NFL's Play 60. My group and I came to this project because we are all involved athletes who believe in the importance of being active and living a healthy lifestyle. We also want to start introducing elementary students to High School athletics at an early age. After doing research and finding statistics showing a large decline in physical activity in schools today compared to 20 years ago we realized this is an area in need of help. Recently we had our pitch day where we presented our ideas. We prepared by finding specific statistics like mentioned before, setting timelines, and having a main goal of getting kids up and active in school. The logistics are that we will travel to SCE on long days and depending on time meet with 1-2 classes. The rest of the week will be spent in the classroom planning lessons with sports and nutrition lessons. The estimated timeline is the whole school year and hopefully get through every grade in the elementary school. We were able to get this together by getting in contact with Sugar Creek's principal, Miss Shelton, who enjoyed and supported our idea. Also, we have had the help with Mrs.Bowman, a kindergarten teacher at SCE. She has been very helpful throughout the whole process by helping with lesson plan ideas and how to approach the students. Overall, the pitch day went well and we received good feedback from administrators. |
