Update on NP Play High School Athletic Lesson: Since the past post, my group and I have had two lessons with kindergartens at SCE in Mrs. Bowman's class. Our first lesson was introducing High School Athletics. Because they are young and have short attention spans we made a simple powerpoint with pictures of all the different sports. We explained each one that the school offers and the benefits that come with being active. We were also able to make it interactive and have them draw sports they play/enjoy on their iPads using an app called Doodle Buddy. Overall, it went well. Mrs. Bowman wants us to keep coming back because the kids are learning and having a good time. Sugar Lesson: Our second lesson was also with Mrs. Bowman's class. We did it over sugar or more simply put for them, good food versus bad food. Again, we made a powerpoint that explained what sugar is, had examples of bad sugars, and had examples of good sugars. We explained the importance of sugar intake and how much a kid their size should have. We did this with an example of a coke can. First, we asked how much sugar they thought was in the can. They all shouted their guesses. Then, slowly we filled up a dixie cup with sand "sugar", and repeatedly asked if they thought that that was the right amount. We did this until the whole cup was almost full and they were shocked. After, while we were cleaning up we did an overview of good and bad foods by having them draw on Doodle Buddy again. The lesson went well and we were able to keep them focused and engaged the whole time. We are moving swiftly through the grades and have already gotten in contact with first grade teachers. Also, we have been contacted by the gym teacher who wants us to come in and help incorporate our lesson with her own!
